Institute Report

The HIV/AIDS Summer Institute took place between July 3 and July 31, 2017. I
recruited a total of five summer institute fellows. Among them were three emerging
adults living in Macon and two Mercer University Global Health Students. We also had
severa
l community youth who volunteered with us at different sites. Among them were a middle school student, a high school student, a global health student and a Research Associate at Mercer University. The fellows received instruction on HIV/AIDS
epidemiology, guided supervision on the creation of interactive HIV/AIDS workshops
and mentoring in community-based research.

HIV/AIDS Workshops

We presented findings from my 2015 HIV/AIDS study and delivered HIV/AIDS
workshops at eight different locations. The locations included sites that I selected and
three sites selected by each of our community fellows. Each community fellow was
tasked with identifying a community agency that they have worked with in the past or
an agency with which they have a working relationship. Altogether we reached 134
people through our workshops. We developed five different interactive workshops to fit different audiences. The workshops included: HIV/AIDS Jeopardy Game; Beach Freenzy, HIV in Action Game, HIV/AIDS Board Game, HIV/AIDS Kahoots Game. Game winners (first, second and third) received a small token (gift). We also produced a HIV/AIDS prevention infographic (fact-sheet) that contained information on how to prevent HIV/AIDS. On the flip side of this fact-sheet we included information on how to make abstinence work for you. We distributed these fact-sheets at several workshop sites.

We delivered the workshops at the following locations:

Virginia College

Miller-Mote Technical College

Methodist Children's Home

Hepzibah Children's Home

First Baptist Church, Downtown Macon

Paxen Learning Center at the Family Investment Center

Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) GED Program, Family Investment Center

Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) GED Program, Buck-Melton Community

Part of our learning and mentoring activities included a visit the Hope Center (HIV/AIDS Clinic) in Macon and meeting and discussion with Dr. Harold Katner. During this meeting we took a tour of the Hope Center; Dr Katner shared his experience with
HIV/AIDS treatment and management in Macon.
